Hashem Safieddine has been named the new head of Hezbollah following the death of Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Safieddine, Nasrallah's cousin, has overseen Hezbollah's political affairs and is a member of its Jihad Council. Although earlier reports suggested Safieddine was killed in the bombardment, a source confirmed he is alive. Designated a terrorist by the U.S. in 2017, Safieddine maintains close ties to Iran and has been anticipated as Nasrallah's successor for decades. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Nasrallah's death as a pivotal moment for Israel.
