A Soldier’s Body Returns Home, Ending 56-Year Wait for Family After Plane Crash in Rohtang

The remains of Sepoy Narayan Singh, an Indian soldier missing for 56 years, were recovered from the Dhaka glacier and returned to his family in Uttarakhand’s Kolpuri village. Singh was among 101 people aboard an Indian Air Force AN-12 aircraft that crashed near Rohtang Pass in 1968. His wife, Basanti Devi, held onto hope of his return until her death in 2011. Singh’s remains were identified through a paybook found with his body. The soldier was cremated with military honors, bringing closure to his family and village after decades of uncertainty.
