The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended flight restrictions for US commercial airlines over Iraq until October 2027. This decision comes due to safety risks from activities by Iranian-aligned militia groups and third-party military operations. The restrictions prevent planes from flying below certain altitudes in Iraqi airspace. These rules also apply to foreign airlines operating as code-share flights with US carriers. Recently, the US Transportation Department fined Air Canada $250,000 for flying in prohibited Iraqi airspace in 2022 and 2023. The FAA aims to ensure the safety of all flights in the region.
