Italy has extended its surrogacy ban to prohibit couples from traveling abroad for the procedure, even in countries where it's legal, such as the US and Canada. Couples violating the law could face up to two years in prison and €1 million fines. The law, passed by Italy's far-right government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has drawn criticism, especially from LGBT groups. Meloni, who has spoken against surrogacy for same-sex couples, believes children should be raised by heterosexual parents. Critics argue the law unfairly targets LGBT couples, making it harder for them to have children.
