A 23-year-old PhD student from IIT-Delhi, Surabhi Verma, died in a tragic incident on November 27 when an excavation pit collapsed at Lothal, Gujarat. Verma, along with her professor, Yama Dixit, and two other researchers, were studying paleoclimatology near the Harappan Valley Civilization site. While Verma tragically lost her life, Professor Dixit was rescued in a fragile condition. Authorities are investigating the cause, with initial reports suggesting the team lacked permission and expertise for excavation in the area. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has sent a team to investigate further.
