The Supreme Court upheld the Centre's 2019 decision to revoke Article 370 ending Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status. A 5-judge bench ruled that J&K did not retain sovereignty when joining the Indian union, dismissing claims of special autonomy. The court said Article 370 was intended as a temporary provision and its scrapping culminated the gradual constitutional integration process over 70 years. The judgement refused to rule on the validity of the 2018 Presidential rule imposition in J&K as it was not specifically challenged. The landmark verdict sides with the Centre on the far-reaching move to revoke special privileges and reorganize the former state.
