The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024 while delivering its verdict on petitions challenging the scrapping of Article 370. A 5-judge bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud ruled that holding direct elections was integral for democracy and could not be withheld. The court stated, "We direct that steps shall be taken to conduct elections for the Legislative Assembly of J&K by September 30, 2024 and statehood shall be restored as soon as possible." The landmark judgment came on a batch of pleas opposing the Centre's 2019 move to abrogate J&K's special status and bifurcate it into two Union Territories.
