The Supreme Court upheld the Centre's 2019 move to abrogate Article 370 ending special status for Jammu and Kashmir. The landmark verdict by a 5-judge bench boosts the BJP ahead of 2024 polls after meeting a key ideological pledge. The court ruled Article 370 was temporary, the President had powers to revoke it, and J&K did not retain sovereignty on joining India. It directed the EC to conduct J&K assembly elections by Sept 30, 2024. However, the court refused to rule on the validity of the 2018 imposition of President's rule in J&K. The judgement sides with the Centre on the reorganization and lockdown since Aug 2019 after nullifying J&K's autonomy under Article 370.
