Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympic athlete convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, was released on parole on Friday after serving over half of his 13-year sentence. Pistorius claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her through a bathroom door in his home. The Steenkamp family said that while justice can never bring Reeva back, they accept the parole board's decision. As part of his parole, Pistorius will be monitored, continue therapy and attend sessions on gender-based violence. Reactions to his release have been mixed, with some South Africans feeling he paid his debt to society while others see his punishment as too short. He will live with his uncle under supervision until his sentence expires in 2029.
