India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is tightening enforcement of the existing limit on mobile connections from August 24, 2026. Individuals can generally hold up to nine SIM connections across all telecom operators, while the limit is six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states. Telecom operators must reject new SIM applications from subscribers who have already reached the applicable limit. The DoT will use its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to verify subscriber records, with representative photographs of eligible subscribers available from August 23.
