FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao has strongly backed Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s food safety crackdown, saying the officer has shown that effective enforcement is possible with existing manpower. Rao said food safety postings were often seen as “punishment postings” because the sector historically received less attention than healthcare. He called for dedicated food safety commissioners in every state. His remarks come as Mundhe faces criticism over his enforcement measures, with the Bombay High Court recently questioning the FDA’s approach as disproportionate and alleging undue haste in shutting establishments and revoking licences.
