Madhuri, also known as Mahadevi, the elephant, returned to the Nandani Jain math in Kolhapur more than a year after being moved to Vantara, an animal rescue centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. She was brought back to the math at 2am on Saturday, prompting hundreds of locals to gather and welcome her with flowers, celebrations and tears. Madhuri had been moved to Vantara on July 28, 2025, following instructions from a High-Powered Committee (HPC), whose decision was upheld by the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court. The transfer followed protests and a prolonged legal battle over her living arrangements. After inspecting the facility where Madhuri was housed, the HPC cleared her return to Kolhapur on September 9, 2026.
