Protests against the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh have turned violent, with indigenous communities and young protesters opposing the mega dam. The unrest escalated on October 23, when an NHPC office, a police station and politicians’ residences were targeted in East Siang district. The Centre has deployed around 250 Rapid Action Force personnel to help control the situation. Protesters fear the project could submerge ancestral land, displace communities and damage the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The government says the project could strengthen India’s water security against China’s upstream dam plans and support flood management and power generation. (PC: India Today)
