Hindi Diwas is observed annually on September 14 to commemorate the adoption of Hindi as an official language of the Republic of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. Written in the Devanagari script, Hindi was accepted as an official language as per the Indian Constitution on this day. The first Hindi Diwas was celebrated in 1953. Hindi is spoken as a first language by about 425 million people and as a second language by 120 million people. It is one of the two official languages of the Union Government, along with English. The day promotes national integration and highlights India's linguistic diversity. Government institutions, schools and organizations hold events to mark Hindi Diwas.
