The Karnataka government has advised against unnecessary travel to Kerala areas affected by the latest Nipah virus outbreak. The outbreak has caused two deaths so far from a dangerous Bangladesh variant of Nipah spreading from humans. Karnataka has intensified surveillance in border districts adjoining Kerala and at points of entry to the state. This includes increased monitoring in districts like Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Chamrajanagara and Mysore that border Kerala. The travel advisory comes amid concerns over the highly lethal Nipah strain causing the outbreak in Kerala, for which there is no vaccine. Karnataka is stepping up precautions to prevent the virus from spreading.
