The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, convicted of raping two women disciples, cannot be granted parole without prior court permission. This decision follows Singh's recent 50-day parole and earlier releases in 2023 and 2022. The court's directive came in response to a petition by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee opposing Singh's parole. Questions were raised about other parole grants. The Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act, 2022 allows regular parole but excludes those convicted of multiple murders or under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
