In a significant move, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved the renaming of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv. Additionally, Ahmednagar will now be called Ahilyanagar after Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Velha tehsil in Pune district will be known as Rajgad, honoring its historical significance as the first capital of the Maratha empire under Shivaji. The decision follows Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's announcement on Ahilyabai Holkar's 298th birth anniversary. Holkar, a prominent figure in Maratha history, ruled the Malwa kingdom. The renaming aims to honor Maratha heritage and acknowledge key historical figures.
