ILO Report: 83% of Jobless Indians Are Youth, Educated Struggle for Employment

According to the India Employment Report 2024 by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD), 83% of India's unemployed population comprises youth, with educated youth facing challenges in securing jobs matching their aspirations. Despite improved education levels, the share of educated unemployed youth has risen from 54% in 2000 to 66% in 2022. Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran stresses that the commercial sector should drive hiring, cautioning against excessive government intervention. The report highlights the urgent need for measures to address youth unemployment and align job opportunities with educational qualifications.
