Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as interim president following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. Mokhber will lead the executive branch until presidential elections are held within 50 days, as required by the constitution. Raisi, who was nearing the end of his first term, died along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials. A council will be formed to organize the national vote, with Mokhber playing a key role. The 68-year-old vice president has been in office since August 2021.
