Food safety officials found expired milk, rotten vegetables and poor hygiene at several five-star hotels in Bengaluru. The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected 26 three-star and five-star hotels on August 7. Officials found expired dairy and bakery items, meat, fish and vegetables. Some food had fungal growth. Hotels were also found storing vegetarian and non-vegetarian food together and violating labelling rules. At The Lalit Ashok, officials seized 76 kg of meat and 200 kg of vegetables. The Radisson Blu saw the biggest seizure, with 105 kg of expired food products. Officials collected 35 samples for testing.

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has asked Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for help in buying land in the state. Pant said he wants to move his base from Delhi to his native Uttarakhand and build his first home there. In a social media post, he said he has been trying to find suitable land for nearly three years. Pant stressed that he does not want the land as a gift. He wants to buy it from the government at official rates. The cricketer also said he hopes to contribute to Uttarakhand and help his “Pahadi people.” Pant is currently in Sri Lanka.

Ravi Tamta, a young innovator from Almora, Uttarakhand, has successfully test-flown a prototype of an electric flying vehicle. Called HAPIDA SKYNeX, the vehicle was developed through Tamta’s startup, Hapida Sky Private Limited. Unlike many experimental flying vehicles, it does not use aviation fuel or ethanol. It runs fully on electricity and produces zero tailpipe emissions. Tamta aims to make personal air travel safe, affordable and sustainable in India. The technology could help connect remote Himalayan areas and support disaster relief. It could also boost tourism. However, the vehicle still needs more tests and regulatory approvals before commercial use.

The US Senate has passed a bill allowing tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil, gas and other exports. The bill was approved 86-11 on Friday. India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan are named as possible targets. The actual tariff rate will be decided by the US Trade Representative. The bill also allows President Donald Trump to waive the tariffs under certain conditions. It now moves to the House of Representatives. The move comes as India and the US work on a trade deal. India has defended its Russian oil purchases, citing energy security needs.

The Centre on Friday held a third day of discussions with Meta, focusing on technical measures to address deepfakes, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), bot accounts and unlabelled AI-generated content. During the meeting, Meta explained how its systems work and outlined plans to tackle the government's concerns. Officials asked the company to implement specific measures and report back on the outcomes. The government also questioned why AI-generated videos without labels continue to circulate despite IT Rules requiring synthetic content to be identified.
