The Bombay High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the 2020 death of Disha Salian, former manager of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Salian died after falling from a building in Mumbai on June 8, 2020, days before Rajput’s death. Her father had sought a fresh investigation, alleging serious doubts about the circumstances of her death. The court has directed the CBI to register an FIR and conduct a comprehensive probe, while stressing that no individual should be treated as an accused without sufficient evidence. The case has remained surrounded by public and political speculation. 

A United Nations report has warned that millions of people in low-lying South Asian cities, including Kolkata and Mumbai, face an immediate risk of displacement as sea levels rise. More than 14 million people across South Asian deltas could eventually be affected by permanent inundation. The report says rising seas are already threatening coastal infrastructure, transport, energy networks, groundwater and sanitation systems. Saltwater intrusion could also contaminate freshwater supplies and agricultural land. Globally, nearly 770 million people live in coastal areas less than five metres above high tide. The UN urged urgent climate adaptation, stronger planning and reliable financing. (PC: ET)

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated following renewed military exchanges and growing confrontation around the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The US launched strikes against Iranian targets, citing threats to American forces and attempts to deploy sea mines that could endanger commercial shipping. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting US-linked positions in the region. President Donald Trump warned Tehran that further retaliation would trigger an even stronger US response. Retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra has been appointed the first full-time Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Mishra, who headed the Indian Air Force’s Western Air Command and was associated with Operation Sindoor, brings extensive experience in leadership, strategic planning and administration. He was selected from a shortlist of three candidates after 5,585 applications were received for the post. The appointment is part of efforts to strengthen the temple trust’s administrative structure and professionalise its operations. Ishanvi Sakharpe, a Class 6 student from Virginia Beach, has earned recognition as the 2026 Virginia State Merit Winner in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her project, “Dolphin Guard.” Her project focuses on using science and problem-solving to reduce potentially harmful interactions between dolphins and human activities such as boating and fishing. The initiative highlights how young students can apply classroom knowledge to real-world environmental challenges. Sakharpe studies at Old Donation School and has also achieved recognition in mathematics competitions. Her achievement demonstrates the potential of student-led innovation to contribute to wildlife conservation and inspire greater interest in science and technology. 

A powerful image from flood-hit Rasuwa, Nepal, shows Nepal Army personnel carrying a baby to safety during an ongoing search-and-rescue operation. The infant was among survivors rescued after devastating flash floods struck the region. Reports say a 45-day-old baby was safely brought to the Rasuwa Dhange camp following the disaster. The floods, linked to a glacier collapse and avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, caused widespread destruction and left thousands dead or missing. Rescue teams continue searching devastated mountainous areas, with the Nepal Army and international teams working to locate survivors and assist affected communities.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office sparked controversy during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, after sharing a cropped version of the leaders’ official group photograph that excluded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders. The edited image positioned Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif prominently in the centre. In contrast, PM Modi and the Indian PMO shared the complete photograph, showing all participating leaders, including Sharif. The move drew criticism and was widely viewed as a symbolic diplomatic gesture amid continuing India-Pakistan tensions. Sharif later shared the full photograph following the backlash. The death toll from Nepal’s devastating flash floods rose to 1,127 on September 2, as rescuers continued searching for 4,858 people still missing a week after the disaster. Police said 6,541 people had been rescued from affected areas. The floods, triggered by the collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal. Authorities deployed 7,912 police personnel for search and rescue, relief distribution and body management. Police have completed postmortem and identification procedures for 1,113 bodies, while 95 have been handed over to relatives.

Brazilian football legend Cafu will visit Darjeeling on September 6 to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Sidra Hills Sports & Wellness Resort and launch two futsal teams. The 2002 World Cup-winning Brazil captain will inaugurate the project, part of Arya Tea Garden’s tourism development plan, virtually from Gorkha Stadium in Lebong. The resort is planned on the Arya tea estate, around 10km from Darjeeling town. Cafu will also launch Darjeeling Warriors FC and North Bengal Fighters FC, with a match planned between the new teams. Several state ministers are expected to attend the programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said there can be no double standards on terrorism, calling it a grave challenge to humanity, at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, on Monday. Speaking in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Modi said terrorism was a common threat and called for dismantling its entire ecosystem, including financing, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens. He urged SCO member states to act against countries that use terrorism as a policy instrument or provide shelter to terrorists. Modi also called for greater cooperation on security, connectivity and regional development.
