A building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, September 6, amid heavy rainfall, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred in a locality near Delhi University’s South Campus, where many college students live. At least 12 fire tenders were deployed as emergency teams began rescue operations. Reports from the scene indicated that the building may have been used as a paying guest accommodation. Rescue personnel are searching through the rubble for survivors, while the exact number of people trapped and the cause of the collapse remain unclear. The situation is developing. 

The world map many people commonly use can make India and other countries near the Equator appear smaller than their actual size because of the Mercator projection’s distortion. The United Nations has backed a move toward the Equal Earth projection, which preserves the relative areas of countries more accurately. India therefore appears somewhat larger on the Equal Earth map, while countries closer to the poles appear less exaggerated. The change is intended to provide a fairer geographical representation, particularly for Africa and other Global South regions. At least nine people have died and several others have fallen ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in villages under Banda tehsil of Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district. Around three dozen people were reportedly taken to hospitals, with more than 25 referred to higher medical facilities. Health officials suspect methyl alcohol poisoning, although the exact cause will be confirmed through post-mortem examinations and investigations. Authorities have deployed medical and administrative teams to affected villages for door-to-door screening. Liquor samples have been sent for analysis, while several liquor outlets in the affected area have reportedly been sealed as investigators work to identify the source. 

Indian powerlifter Madhura Kar delivered an outstanding performance at the World Powerlifting Championships, winning four gold medals in the Sub-Junior Women’s 52kg category. The young athlete from Jalpaiguri recorded a 107.5kg squat, 60kg bench press and 125kg deadlift, producing a combined total of 292.5kg. Her achievement adds to an impressive record at the national and international level. Kar, a Class XII student, has previously won national titles and secured silver at the 2026 Asian Powerlifting Championships in China. Her performance highlights the growing presence of young Indian women in international strength sports.

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke criticised the Centre after a boys’ PG building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday.   “Will the PM visit DU again and explain how did this happen?” Dipke asked. He said students should not have to “pay the price for failing infrastructure and neglect”.   AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj and the Congress also reacted and called for better safety and faster rescue efforts.   Around 40 to 50 students were feared trapped when the five-storey building collapsed. Several students were rescued and taken to hospital.  

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for talks on ending the Ukraine war. Their visit came a day after they met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.   The White House said the envoys discussed plans for the next steps with Putin. Details of the talks have not been made public.   Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the envoys and said Ukraine was ready for talks. Russia and Ukraine have also agreed to pause strikes on Moscow and Kyiv for three days as peace efforts continue. (PC: Reuters)  

State Bank of India plans to hire around 12,000 employees in the current financial year, Chairman CS Setty said. The recruitment will include clerical and officer posts. The final number may change based on retirements and the bank’s needs.   SBI also plans to expand its branch network. The bank expects to add around 200 to 250 branches on a net basis during the year.   SBI had over 2.45 lakh employees as of March 2026. It hired more than 25,000 people during the 2025-26 financial year, according to its annual report.  

A PG hostel building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday, killing one person and leaving two others in critical condition. Several people were feared trapped under the debris.   Rescue teams pulled out six people and rushed them to nearby hospitals. The rescue operation is still underway.   Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident. Teams from the DDMA, NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence have been deployed at the site.   Authorities are working to rescue anyone still trapped under the collapsed building.  

US President Donald Trump is reportedly working on a broader strategy for the Middle East after the Iran war ends. The plan is still being developed, according to an Axios report.   The strategy may bring US allies closer together to contain Iran. Washington could also act as a security guarantor in the region.   The plan may include efforts to move forward on Gaza, improve ties between Israel and Syria, and strengthen the Israel-Lebanon agreement.   Another major goal is to expand the Abraham Accords and secure a normalisation deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
