As the highly transmissible JN.1 Covid variant spreads in India, the country witnessed an uptick in infections with 358 fresh cases recorded in the past 24 hours. The spike comes after months of low transmission and is primarily being driven by outbreaks in states like Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Health authorities held an urgent meeting, urging preparation against emerging strains. Total active caseload in India now stands at 2,669, though hospitalizations remain low. Experts advise caution but say available treatments remain effective against JN.1. States are monitoring the situation to plan appropriate response if needed.

So far, 21 cases of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected across three states - Goa, Kerala and Maharashtra. With 19 cases, Goa has reported the maximum number so far. In view of the rising Covid cases in some parts of India, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya today reviewed the situation and preparedness. He advised states to ensure smooth coordination with the Centre for efficient pandemic management. Though India's cases remain significantly lower than global numbers, there has been a steep rise in active cases in the last two weeks, officials said. Most of the current cases are mild with no rise in hospitalisations. States have been asked to closely monitor emerging evidence on cases, symptoms and severity to plan appropriate response.

Amidst the threat of the JN.1 variant after 4 deaths, a survey reveals only 1 in 9 Indians are opting for RT-PCR testing despite COVID-like symptoms. 76% admitted not getting tested while 12% underwent RT-PCR and 6% took Rapid Antigen test after family members showed symptoms recently. People cited seeing no point in testing and found it convenient to simply take medication instead. With Singapore reporting over 50,000 JN.1 cases, India risks missing cases especially if the strain causes severe disease in vulnerable groups. Experts suggest mandating testing for international arrivals from outbreak countries and providing free testing to improve surveillance. The reluctance and gaps in tracking despite a new threat looming large highlights persisting pitfalls in India's pandemic preparedness.

India's Covid-19 cases hit a seven-month high of 614 on Wednesday, along with 3 deaths, sounding alarm bells. The surge is linked to the JN.1 sub-variant detected first in Kerala. With cases rising, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired an urgent review meeting asking states to remain vigilant against new strains and conduct mock drills every quarter for efficient coordination. Total active cases stand at 2,300 currently. Mandaviya advised tracking variants via genome sequencing and managing public information to avoid panic. Experts highlighted 16 recent deaths were those with comorbidities and outbreaks localized so far. The spike after sustained decline and emergence of new sub-variants warrants stepping up surveillance and preparedness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a "variant of interest," emphasizing a low global health risk. Originating from the BA.2.86 lineage, JN.1 has been monitored since its initial detection in the US in September. Despite comprising 15% to 29% of US cases, the CDC asserts that current vaccines effectively guard against severe outcomes. China recently identified seven cases of this subvariant. WHO's assessment aligns with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, assuring the public that JN.1 poses no heightened threat compared to other circulating variants.

Experts predict Covid cases will continue rising as the population builds immunity to the recently discovered JN.1 variant. While its severity remains unclear, JN.1's symptoms could be more noticeable than a common cold, resembling the flu with fatigue, body ache, and sore throat. Though less risky for younger people, older adults should enhance precautions as it could endanger those with preexisting conditions. JN.1, first spotted in Luxembourg and now in over 38 countries, contains a spike mutation suspected of evading immunity. Indian Medical Association's Dr Rajeev Jayadevan says the surge was expected after seven months without a spike. He warns JN.1 has rapidly become the most common subtype in countries conducting more testing, replacing previous variants.
