All-Women Police Team Holds First Encounter in Ghaziabad, Arrests Wanted Criminal

An all-women police team carried out their first encounter in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and arrested a 22-year-old criminal named Jitendra. Police said he was wanted in several cases of robbery, theft, and snatching. The incident happened late last night when Jitendra, riding a stolen scooter, tried to escape a police checkpoint. He lost control of the vehicle, fell, and fired at the officers. The police fired back, injuring him before arresting him. A pistol, scooter, phone, and tablet were recovered. Supreme Court Says Time Has Come To Decriminalise Defamation In India

The Supreme Court on Monday said it may be time to decriminalise defamation in India. Justice MM Sundresh made the remark while hearing a plea against a criminal defamation case filed by a JNU professor against The Wire. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for The Wire, agreed with the court’s view. Defamation is still a criminal offence under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code. In 2016, the Supreme Court had upheld criminal defamation, saying reputation was part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution. (PC: India Today)

Indian Navy Plans ₹80,000 Crore Tender for Four Advanced Amphibious Warships

The Indian Navy is set to issue a mega tender worth about ₹80,000 crore for four large Landing Platform Dock (LPD) amphibious warships. The contract aims to boost India’s amphibious and expeditionary warfare capabilities, including long-range anti-ship missiles, air defence, fixed-wing naval drone operations, and the ability to act as command-and-control centres for shore operations. Indian firms like L&T, Mazagon Dock, Cochin Shipyard, and Hindustan Shipbuilders are likely to lead construction, with foreign design partners such as Navantia, Naval Group, and Fincantieri contributing design expertise. Expected to be one of the largest surface warship contracts in India’s history, the proposal will be discussed soon at a high-level Defence Ministry meeting.
