Abandoned Cheetah Cub Mukhi Becomes Symbol of India's Wildlife Comeback

Brief by Shorts91 Newsdesk / 06:01am on 19 Sep 2025,Friday India

Seventy years after cheetahs vanished from India, Project Cheetah achieves a remarkable milestone with 17 Indian-born cubs in three years. Mukhi, the first cub born on Indian soil in March 2023 at Kuno National Park, symbolizes conservation success after surviving sibling deaths from heatwave, maternal abandonment, and injuries. Born to Namibian transplants Jwala and Shaurya under the 2022 reintroduction program, Mukhi was hand-reared by veterinary teams and learned independent hunting. Despite a recent leopard-cheetah territorial clash claiming one sub-adult, Kuno now hosts 25 healthy cheetahs including nine adults and 16 India-born individuals. Officials call Mukhi a symbol of courage, with her documented care serving as reference for future global conservation efforts. (PC: Zooborns)
