Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was the only opposition leader from the INDIA bloc to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony on Sunday, citing his "constitutional duty" as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Kharge stated his presence was necessary but did not confirm if he would congratulate Modi. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, chose to skip the event, calling the government formation "undemocratic and unconstitutional." Banerjee said the TMC did not receive an invitation and even if they did, they would not attend. She extended best wishes to the country and its people instead.
