The BJP criticized the Congress and INDIA bloc for their comments on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's remarks about the 1975 Emergency. BJP leader Amit Malviya urged the opposition to accept their loss in the Speaker election gracefully, saying, "Don’t behave like a sore loser." Former minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called the Emergency "the sin of the murder of democracy." After being elected by voice vote, Birla condemned the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, calling it a "black chapter" in India's history. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and others told Birla the reference was political and "could have been avoided."
