The Congress party criticized three new criminal laws that came into force on July 1, 2024, calling them a "cut, copy, and paste job." Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge claimed the laws were passed by suspending 146 MPs. Senior leader P. Chidambaram noted the laws could have been made with simple amendments. He also said some provisions are unconstitutional. The laws were passed without opposition participation due to mass suspensions. Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the laws, saying they prioritize justice over penalties and are "made by Indians, for Indians."
