Gautam Gambhir's appointment as Team India's head coach has been delayed due to ongoing salary negotiations with the BCCI. Gambhir, expected to succeed Rahul Dravid after the latter's tenure ended post-T20 World Cup 2024, was one of two candidates interviewed, alongside WV Raman. VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy, is temporarily filling the role during India's T20I series in Zimbabwe. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the new coach will be in charge from the Sri Lanka series starting July 27. The BCCI is also planning to allow Gambhir a free hand in selecting his support staff.
