Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, disqualified from the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight, announced her retirement from the sport. Tokyo bronze medalist Bajrang Punia and Rio Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik expressed support, emphasizing that Phogat’s struggle embodies the nation’s pride. Punia stated, “Vinesh, you did not lose but were defeated. You are India’s pride.” Malik added, “It’s the defeat of every daughter of our country.” Former sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore called the situation “sad and heartbreaking,” urging Vinesh to stay positive and continue her journey.
