Senior IAS officer T V Somanathan has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary of India. He will take over from Rajiv Gauba, who is completing a record five-year term this month. The government has approved Somanathan's appointment for a two-year tenure starting August 30. Currently serving as Finance Secretary, Somanathan is a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre. He has held various key positions, including Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office and Expenditure Secretary. Somanathan is also a Chartered Accountant and holds a PhD in economics.
