The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The virus has seen a significant rise in cases, with over fourteen thousand reported and five hundred twenty-four deaths in Africa this year. WHO's declaration follows the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s announcement of the outbreak as a public health emergency. A new variant of monkeypox has emerged, causing concern due to lesions appearing on the genitals, complicating detection. The outbreak, primarily centered in Congo, has now spread to thirteen African countries, necessitating a coordinated global response.
