Health officials warn that gonorrhoea in England is becoming more resistant to antibiotics, raising fears it could soon be untreatable. Last year saw 85,000 cases, the highest since records began in 1918. While most cases are treatable, there’s been an increase in infections resistant to ceftriaxone, the primary antibiotic used. The UK Health Security Agency detected 15 cases of this drug-resistant strain between June 2022 and May 2024. Officials urge the use of condoms and regular STI testing, especially for those with new or casual partners, to prevent the spread of the infection.
