The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike of doctors in response to the vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital during protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The strike will commence at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, and end at 6 am on Sunday, August 18. Essential and emergency services will continue, but routine OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended. The IMA emphasized the need for national sympathy for the doctors’ cause, condemning the violence that occurred during the peaceful protests.
