Sweden has confirmed its first case of a contagious mpox strain, marking the first reported instance of this strain outside Africa. This development comes after the World Health Organization declared mpox a global public health emergency. The outbreak, initially identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has now spread to at least 12 other countries in central and eastern Africa. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for a coordinated international response to address the crisis. In response, the international vaccine group Gavi has pledged up to $500 million for vaccine distribution to affected regions in Africa.
