A political firestorm erupted in Assam as more "bomb-like" objects were discovered across the state following threats from the proscribed group ULFA(I). The group claimed to have planted 24 bombs meant to detonate on Independence Day, but they allegedly failed due to a "technical failure." On Thursday and Friday, police found 10 of these objects, including two in Guwahati, across five districts. The discovery has led to intense criticism from the Opposition, who are demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the security lapse. Assam Police also announced a Rs 5-lakh reward for “Credible information on persons involved in making, transporting, planning of these devices”.
