In response to the recent rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the West Bengal government has launched the "Rattirer Sathi" programme to enhance safety for women working night shifts. The initiative includes CCTV coverage, women volunteers, mobile apps with police-linked alarms, and breathalyser checks at hospitals. Additional measures include night patrols at medical institutions, visible identity cards for staff, and a 12-hour limit on shifts for women doctors. This launch comes as doctors across India protest the brutal incident and demand stronger protection laws. The Indian Medical Association has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention.
