The Centre has rebuked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call for stricter rape laws, citing that most of the 123 allocated fast-track courts for rape and child abuse in Bengal remain non-operational. Union Minister Annpurna Devi highlighted that out of 123 fast-track courts, only six have been established as of June 2024, despite 48,600 pending cases. Devi also criticized West Bengal for failing to implement key emergency helplines. Banerjee had previously urged for stringent central legislation and quick trials for rape cases, citing a national crisis of frequent rapes and murders.
