The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a 12-hour general strike (Bangla Bandh) in West Bengal on Wednesday from 6 am to 6 pm. The strike is in response to police action against demonstrators who marched to the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Tuesday. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar stated that the bandh is a necessary reaction to what he called the "autocratic regime" of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, accusing it of ignoring public demands for justice.
