Sayani Das, a 26-year-old open water swimmer from Bengal, has become the first Indian woman to swim across the North Channel. On August 30, she completed the 38km swim from Donaghadee in Northern Ireland to Portpatrick in Scotland in 13 hours and 22 minutes. This swim is part of the Oceans Seven challenge, which includes seven of the world’s most difficult open water swims. Das has previously completed the English Channel, Catalina Channel, Molokai Channel, and Cook Strait. The North Channel is known for its cold temperatures, averaging 13°C. Sayani, who began preparing for this swim in 2022, has now conquered five of the seven channels required for the Oceans Seven challenge.
