In Kolkata, junior doctors protested the rape and murder of a trainee doctor by presenting an artificial spine to Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, symbolically demanding that the police "grow a backbone." The doctors have been protesting since the August 9 incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They accuse Goyal of mishandling the investigation and have called for his resignation. The protest included a 24-hour march and a planned state-wide blackout on September 4 in memory of the victim. The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
