A new study published in Nature reveals India as the world's largest plastic polluter, releasing 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. This accounts for one-fifth of global plastic emissions. The country's official waste generation rate is likely underestimated, as it excludes rural areas, open burning, and informal recycling. Nigeria and Indonesia follow with 3.5 and 3.4 million tonnes of emissions, respectively.
