India has identified its first suspected case of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, following the World Health Organisation’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern last month. The patient, a young male who recently traveled from a country with active mpox transmission, is currently isolated, and his sample is being tested. The Health Ministry reassured that the risk of a large outbreak in India remains low. Measures, including alerts at entry points and readiness of laboratories, were implemented following the WHO alert. Mpox, caused by the MPXV virus, can lead to severe symptoms, especially in vulnerable populations.
