The Union Cabinet has expanded the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to provide Rs 5 lakh annual health coverage to all citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of income. Previously, the scheme offered income-based coverage to the bottom 40% of the population. This extension will benefit an additional 6 crore elderly citizens from 4.5 crore families, easing healthcare costs for India's aging population. Eligible beneficiaries will receive a new PM-JAY card. The move is expected to significantly transform public healthcare by addressing the medical and financial challenges faced by senior citizens in the country.
