On September 17, 2024, the Supreme Court of India canceled the criminal proceedings against Army personnel involved in the 2021 Nagaland civilian killings. On December 4, 2021, an Army team mistakenly fired at a truck carrying miners in Oting village, killing six civilians. Eight more died in subsequent violence. The court’s decision to close the criminal cases does not preclude the Army from taking disciplinary action. The Nagaland government had challenged the Centre's refusal to grant sanction for prosecution under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
