A devastating fire at Jhansi’s Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College claimed the lives of 10 newborns on Friday night. Bhagwan Das, an eyewitness, alleged, “A nurse lit a matchstick while trying to connect the pipe of an oxygen cylinder. As soon as the match was lit, the whole ward caught fire.” Officials initially cited a short circuit as the cause, but a probe is underway. Expired fire extinguishers and inactive alarms worsened the chaos. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath announced ₹5 lakh for each victim’s family, with PM Modi adding ₹2 lakh.
