Assam Bans Public Consumption of Beef, Strengthens 2021 Cattle Preservation Act

The Assam government has banned the public consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, festivals, and community events, effective immediately. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on December 4, 2024, after analyzing statements from Congress leaders who criticized beef distribution in Samaguri during the recent bypolls. This ban is an extension of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021, which already restricts cattle slaughter and beef sales in areas with Hindu, Jain, and Sikh majorities. Opposition leader Hafiz Rafiqul Islam condemned the move, questioning its consistency and impact on personal freedoms.
