Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was found guilty in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. The verdict was delivered on January 18, 2025, with sentencing set for January 20. Roy, arrested shortly after the crime, denied the charges, claiming he was framed. The crime sparked nationwide protests. Judge Anirban Das indicated that Roy could face the death penalty or life imprisonment. CPI-M leader Brinda Karat criticized the corruption linked to the incident.
