Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, will be sentenced today by the Sealdah court. Found guilty under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Roy faces either life imprisonment or the death penalty. The victim, a 31-year-old doctor, was found dead on August 9, 2024, sparking nationwide outrage. Judge Anirban Das criticized lapses by police and hospital authorities in the 160-page judgment. Roy’s final statement will be heard before sentencing at 12:30 PM. The case investigation had been transferred to the CBI.
