The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed West Bengal's appeal in the Calcutta High Court against the life imprisonment of Sanjay Roy, convicted for raping and murdering a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital. The CBI argued that only the prosecuting agency could challenge the sentence's adequacy, not the state government. The Advocate General countered, asserting state jurisdiction as the initial FIR was filed by state police. A division bench, led by Justices Debangshu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi, will hear further arguments on January 27. The case had triggered national protests demanding justice for the victim.
